6/28/2023 0 Comments Mermaid moon by susann cokal![]() ![]() ![]() Cokal’s moody and sea-drenched tale weaves touches of Hans Christian Andersen with a dash of Pied Piper, using language that gorgeously sets each scene, including the exceedingly creepy bone vault, with its tiny baby skulls and “the yellow-white ribs known as Mother.” Lyrical, complex, and occasionally dark, with rich rewards for patient readers. Meanwhile, floating on the seaskin, Sanna’s sea sisters and father desperately wait for a song to indicate Sanna’s progress and safety. Sanna’s magic inspires jealousy in the powerful and unnatural Baroness, who manipulates a betrothal to her son. Armed with only a name, Lisabet, Sanna magicks herself legs and walks unsteadily ashore to find the castle and, she hopes, news of her mother. ![]() Though Sanna’s voice is one of the most beautiful, Sanna’s mother was landish, not seavish, a fact so unacceptable that the flok matriarch cast a spell of forgetting over everyone involved. Mermaid Moon by Susann Cokal An award-winning author tells of a mermaid who leaves the sea in search of her landish mother in a captivating tale spun with beautiful prose, lush descriptions, empathy, and keen wit. Gr 9 Up–“This is just a children’s tale would you wreck your ship for it?” Sanna and her marreminde sisters lure passing sailors to their deaths with siren songs, as their mothers did before them. The reason for this is that it has never been one of my favourites, so reading it again was like meeting up after many years for a tentative coffee with an old acquaintance you have never been very fond of! I reread My Brother Michael for Mary Stewart Day, simply because it was one of the few of her books I hadn’t read for ages. For Mary Stewart Day, Annabel re-read My Brother Michael, despite this not being one of her favourite Mary Stewart novels, and I have persuaded her to share her review here. Some of you will have read author Annabel Frazer‘s previous guest reviews on this blog: she has shared her thoughts on Stormy Petrel, and, along with her 13-year-old daughter Olivia, The Ivy Tree. ![]() 6/28/2023 0 Comments Firefall peter watts![]() ![]() 'State-of-the-art science fiction: smart, dark and it grabs you by the throat from page one' Neal Ascher. Dragos doesn't care, however, and comes after her with all the force of his formidable powers and bristling with outrage and fury. Being a clever woman, she's stolen only a single penny, and she even left a note of apology in its place. ![]() When we first meet her, she's just been coerced into stealing from a powerful dragon lord. Pia, the central character, is very strong and principled. The story is actually really good, and so well-plotted that in some ways, I'd say this is a lot closer to urban fantasy than your typical PNR there's as much focus on the story as there is on the relationship. I'm happy to report that in this case, the book more than lives up to the hype. Besides, I have a serious weakness for shapeshifters, which has sometimes led to disastrous reads and sometimes led to really fun ones. :D Is it terribly shallow to admit that I snapped up this book because I heard there was hot *whispers* dragon sex in it? I rarely read paranormal romances these days, but all of the reviews I saw for this book were raves, so I was wild with curiosity. ![]() 4.5 stars Oooo, smut smut smut smut smut. ![]() 6/28/2023 0 Comments Uncle chekhov play![]() Uncle Vanya is unique among Chekhov's major plays because it is essentially an extensive reworking of The Wood Demon, a play he published a decade earlier.
